Utah: Legislation Would Shut Down Local Speed Traps
Utah state legislator proposes legislation to shut down local speed traps.

Local jurisdictions in Utah would be less likely to set up interstate highway speed traps under legislation proposed by state Senator John W. "Bill" Hickman (R-Washington County). His measure would send all local traffic ticket revenue directly to the state, removing the incentive of county and municipal governments to use speeding tickets to balance the budget.

"Some local governments are taking advantage and generating a revenue stream from the interstate," Hickman told KUTV television in an interview. His bill would eliminate the practice.

Hickman, who drives a silver C6 Corvette to work, has never received a speed trap ticket personally.
